Ableton Live mono phase: Utility mono, Stereo Width, return tracks, Max devices vs spectral phase repair
Ableton Session headphones lie. Utility Width 0% on Master, Stereo Width and Max imagers, and hot stereo Returns often cancel Mid when phones or YouTube fold. Fix Utility polarity and small delay align first. Frequency-aware phase repair belongs only after residual L/R fights remain on stereo beds. Distinct DAW niche (not folk-instrument pages). Cross-links: polarity, vs time-align, null-test, when-not.

PHIXER is free stereo phase-repair (VST3/CLAP/AU · Win/Mac/Linux) from Riverflux Audio. Frequency-aware phase rotation for leftover L/R fights on stereo material. It is not a compressor, not a widener, and not a substitute for polarity invert, Utility mono, or delay align. Polarity and timing first; PHIXER after residual spectral fights.
What Ableton Live mono-phase failure sounds like
- Utility mono on Master hollows a return. A stereo reverb or ping-pong return looks huge on headphones, then Utility Width 0% eats Mid body.
- Stereo Width or Haas-style delay on a Group. Session headphones shimmer; phone and club mono fold thin the kick or vocal chest.
- Max for Live stereo devices vs stock Utility. A Max widener or spectral imager can fight stock Utility mono checks without fixing polarity.
- Parallel racks that never get folded. Dry + parallel Drum Rack or bass chain cancel when you finally check mono.
- Fine in Session headphones, broken on export or livestream. Same destinations as YouTube / social mono and null-test workflow.
Fast Ableton mono audition (about 60 seconds)
- Drop Utility on Master (or a dedicated Monitor track). Set Width to 0% for true mono fold. Toggle it, do not leave it on.
- A/B critical Groups and Returns with Utility mono engaged. Note what disappears: kick body, bass Mid, vocal chest, reverb bloom.
- Solo pairs that share energy: kick vs bass Group, vocal vs stereo return, layered Sample vs Simpler stacks.
- Optional: watch a correlation meter on Master, then with Utility mono off so you hear stereo again.
Order of operations in Ableton Live (before spectral phase rotation)
1. Polarity with Utility or stock Invert
On one path of a dual DI+mic, dual-cab, or parallel rack, flip polarity (Utility Phase L/R or Invert device) when body returns immediately. Guide: polarity vs phase.
2. Small delay align (not Haas width)
Use track Delay or a simple delay device in milliseconds/samples to align secondary paths to the hero. Do not use short L/R Haas delays as "width" before a mono check. Cousin: vs time-align.
3. Utility Width and Stereo Width honestly
Width below 100% collapses Side energy. That is a fold tool, not a repair. If Width 0% kills the part, fix polarity and routing first. Do not "rescue" with more Max stereo imagers.
4. Return tracks and Send levels
Stereo returns (reverb, delay, chorus) often cause Mid cancel when summed with dry. Mono-check Master with Returns muted vs open. Prefer mono-safe lows on critical returns. Related: stereo reverb mono.
5. Max for Live vs spectral phase repair
Max stereo devices and spectral wideners change image and Side energy. They do not replace polarity or delay match. PHIXER is for residual band-by-band L/R fights on material that must stay stereo after those steps.
6. Only then audition residual L/R spectral fights
If a stereo clip or Group must stay stereo and Utility mono still hollows a band after polarity, delay, and return hygiene, gentle frequency-aware phase rotation can help. Prove it with Utility mono A/B, plugin bypassed vs engaged.
Ableton path types and typical failure modes
| Path | Common mono failure | First fix |
|---|---|---|
| Utility Width 0% on Master | Returns / Groups hollow | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends; mono-safe lows |
| Parallel Drum Rack / bass rack | Dry + parallel cancel body | Polarity; align; simplify parallel |
| Stereo Width / Max imager on Group | Huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; center lows; Utility mono proof |
| Haas delay as width | Comb on fold | Remove Haas; real delay-align only |
| Export / livestream fold | Fine in Session, hollow on phone | YouTube mono / Utility mono habit |
Ableton checklist (to export or stream)
1. Keep a Utility mono toggle on Master
Make Width 0% a muscle memory before bounce or livestream. Do not trust Session headphones alone.
2. Audit Returns with mono engaged
Mute each stereo return under Utility mono. Note which Send eats Mid. Lower Send or mono-fold the return's low band.
3. Bypass Max wideners during the check
Prove the bed without imagers. If mono is fine without them and broken with them, the widener is the problem.
4. Re-check after Group or rack rebuilds
New parallel chains change polarity and latency. Flip Utility Phase again after you rebuild racks or freeze/flatten.
When PHIXER helps in Ableton
- The material is already stereo and must stay stereo (stereo sample, stereo Group print, stereo return bed).
- Utility polarity, delay align, Width honesty, and return levels are cleaned up, but mono still hollows a band.
- You can A/B Utility mono with PHIXER bypassed and hear clearer body or Mid without wrecking the image.
- You are not using it to replace Utility Phase, track Delay align, or to "fix" Haas width.
Decision table
| You notice… | First try | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Body thins when Utility Width hits 0% | Polarity; quieter stereo Sends | Fold reveals Side-only energy |
| Parallel rack fights dry | Utility Phase; delay secondary | Dual-path arrival fight |
| Max imager huge in cans, thin on phone | Bypass imager; center lows | Width ≠ phase repair |
| Stereo bed still cancels by band | PHIXER on that stereo bed | Residual spectral L/R fight |
| Mono sample alone is dull | Tone / EQ / gain / sample choice | Not an L/R repair job |
When NOT to use PHIXER here
- You have not Utility-mono auditioned Master yet.
- The fix is obviously Utility Phase, track Delay, quieter Sends, or bypassing a widener.
- You want PHIXER to make the Session wider or "more Ableton." Wrong job.
- The path is mono and the print problem is balance or EQ.
- See also when not to use PHIXER.
Quick path: Utility Width 0% on Master → polarity on dual paths → delay-align secondary (not Haas) → honest Width / Returns → bypass Max imagers for proof → PHIXER only for leftover stereo cancellation → fold again before export or stream.
